Utah's 1897 Pioneer Jubilee - Artifacts Exhibit

Jubilee Badge. This metal pin was made specifically for the Utah Pioneer Jubilee by Whitehead and Hoag of Newark, New Jersey. The image combines the portrait of Brigham Young on a patriotic stars-and-stripes background. Similar pins were popular in the 1890s for political campaigns, while this example expresses both a separatist religious identity for Utahns and a desire to be considered a valuable part of the United States by incorporating the flag (Utah had only been a state for one year prior to the Jubilee).
