Jubilee
Badge. This metal pin was made specifically for the Utah Pioneer
Jubilee by Whitehead and Hoag of Newark, New Jersey. The image combines
the portrait of Brigham Young on a patriotic stars-and-stripes background.
Similar pins were popular in the 1890s for political campaigns, while this
example expresses both a separatist religious identity for Utahns and a
desire to be considered a valuable part of the United States by
incorporating the flag (Utah had only been a state for one year prior to
the Jubilee). (Accession # 1986; dimensions: 1.25" diam.; donor: unknown) |
